Beyond Glee: The Art of a Cover Song

Greetings Salutations and Good Morning!
Welcome to The Bumblebee Protocol
Brought to you by the nearest Band Name Generator (Story coming soon!)

About 2 months ago I was at the mall, visiting the Apple Store because the power cord for my Macbook wasn't charging.  Sitting down to wait for my appointment, I couldn't help but overhear the conversation of a group of girls near me. Their argument centered on the television show Glee and which of the [cover] songs was their favorite, their aggressive negations narrowing the field down to three songs, with each advocating for their own.**

Later that night as I was relaxing and catching up on social media, I started thinking about the conversation in the mall. Since the only way I've come close to watching an episode of Glee is Michael Buckley's Glee Caps (Check him out: WHAT THE BUCK), I had to do a little research, and then discovered that the cast of Glee has had 200 some singles on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts.

After this finding, I began to question how the popularity status structure affected these singles. How would these singles rank if we considered them one by one, based on quality alone? Eventually, this query of which cover song is the most unique, shifted the focus on to my own favorites.

Whenever I am deciding what covers to put on my favorite list, my main deciding factor is a piece of advice I found several years ago on youtube (of all places).

"A cover is technically not suppose to be compared [to the original]. The point of a cover is not to upstage the original version. It is to reinvent it in a new direction."

The idea behind this is that all the covers on my favorites list are completely unique in their own right, and should be able to stand all by themselves. By breaking down walls some of the covers are even better than the originals.

(In each of following I have listed the original version followed by the cover)

1. The first cover on my list is from the very first band I started listening to (when I was 6). My dad loved the Beach Boys and they were constantly playing at home and in the car.

The first time I heard "California Dreamin'" by The Mamas & The Papas on the radio I thought it was the Beach Boys cover version. (Must not have had very good hearing).

2.  I'm not as big a fan of The Beetles as some other people I know but I like some of the unconventional covers not normally seen in the American media. This cover of Eleanor Rigby by Swedish Industrial Metal act Pain (led by front man Peter Tägtgren) is fantastic.

3. The British band Coldplay has been quite popular with audiences around the world. I had a listen to most of their hits when I watched the closing ceremonies for the Paralympic Games.

This cover of Paradise is from a group of guys that create amazing covers using only their voices, a piano, and a cello.

"Paradise"

The Piano Guys
"Paradise (Peponi) African Style" (Piano/Cello Cover)

4. Gnarles Barkley created a classic with their single "Crazy", and it was one of those songs that was instantly recognizable . One of my friends had it as her ringtone and would start dancing every time someone would call her.

This cover comes from symphonic metal band Within Temptation, who are from The Netherlands.

5. Legendary British artist Mike Oldfield has composed many brilliant pieces over the course of his career. One such masterpiece is the song Moonlight Shadow. The Polish band Pathfinder composed a cover for this song which was released in 2009. When I first heard their version I couldn't find the bottom half of my jaw. (In fact I think I'm still missing it).

6. Finnish vocalist Ari Koivunen, who currently sings lead vocals for the band Amoral, started out solo after winning the Finnish Idols competition. On his first album, Fuel for the Fire, Ari did a cover of the song "Hetki Lyö" by Kirka which is actually a cover of the original "Beat the Clock" by The McCoys.

So in other words, one Finnish artist (Kirka) covered The McCoys' song in Finnish, and a second Finnish artist (Ari) covered the first Finnish artist.

7. Finnish band Nightwish has done a variety of covers from many different artists and genres. There are two I'd like to highlight, each of them come from different periods during the bands history.

The first is a cover of "Walking in the Air" by Howard Blake from the 1982 animated Film The Snowman. Nightwish really made this song their own while also retaining the beauty and mysticism associated with the film.

The second song is "The Heart Asks Pleasure First" from the movie The Piano. This song was recorded as they were in the studio working on their 6th album. However it wasn't until 2012 that the single was finally released.  According to some sources Michael Nyman wasn't keen on the recording, but with persuasion he decided to let Nightwish release it. Nightwish's cover features an instrumental track, as well as a track with lyrics that were composed by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen.

8. The Northern Kings is a Finnish symphonic metal cover super group. They consist of four musicians who have already become well known in their existing bands. They have several albums out full of amazing covers. There are three covers I wanted to highlight from them.

The first is by Tina Turner. Her single "We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)" which was the hit song to the 1985 film Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome. Here the Kings have a music video to showcase their cover.

The second cover is Cutting Crew's number one hit "(I Just) Died in your Arms Tonight." The vocalist for this cover is J. Ahola.

The final cover is Australian artist, Kylie Minogue's 1987 worldwide breakthrough hit "I Should Be So Lucky" The track's vocalist is JP Leppäluoto.

9. The last couple covers on my list involve a Swedish band by the name of ABBA. I think its only natural to have a few ABBA covers because they [the band] are so iconic.

The first is ABBA's hit "Lay All Your Love On Me" which was released in 1980. It is covered by German artist Tobias Sammet and was recorded with Avantasia, his symphonic, power metal super group.

The second cover is of ABBA's 3rd single, "SOS", from their self-titled 1975 album. It is covered by the German power metal/Neo-classical metal band At Vance.

The third and final cover is one of ABBA's biggest euro disco hits, "Gimme! Gimme! Gimmie! (A Man After Midnight)" It was recorded and released in 1979 with "The King Has Lost His Crown" as the B-side. The Swedish humorist heavy metal group Black Ingvars who are famous for cover versions from many different musical styles (really worth checking them out), covers this song on their album Kid's Super Hits.

**BTW the three songs those girls at the mall had picked out were Bohemian Rhapsody, Defying Gravity, and Don't Stop Believin, in case anyone was curious.

Survey: 2011

Greetings Salutations and Good Morning!
Welcome to The Bumblebee Protocol
Brought to you by the nearest Band Name Generator (Story coming soon!)

I'm just a tad bit late, (I was hibernating), but the following is my annual short survey reporting on the all the events and milestones of the past year.

End of the Year Survey: 2011

1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before?
  • I drove my car in the pouring rain and survived!

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions?
  • I didn't make any this year. Not really into that trend. I like living in the moment, however, this year I'm thinking about setting some serious goals for the immediate future. So we shall see how the year plays out.

3. Did anyone close to your give birth?
  • Yes. Several of the ladies I went to college with became first time mothers this year.
4. Did anyone close to your die?
  • This year was very hard for myself and my family. Death came to visit us in many forms, including a freak natural disaster (that could have been avoided), cancer, medical complications, and even murder.
5. What countries did you visit?
  • Narnia ... via the Dawn Treader and I went back to Alagaesia (see number 26)
6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
  • My drivers license. Apparently 4th time isn't the charm even if you've mastered parallel parking.
7. What date from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
  • March 11 (The earthquake and resulting tsunami that hit Japan)

  • The East Coast Earthquake (first one I've been in)

  • The 19 inning baseball game between the Atlanta Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates that ended with a blown call. (Watched the whole thing)
  • The death of Osama Bin Laden
  • The Egyptian Revolution (and all of the other protests around the world)
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
  • I became self-employed. (Currently in the very early stages of infancy )
9. What was your biggest failure?
  • I still haven't started a steady job yet. I don't view it as a failure though because I have been steadily sending out applications and have two interviews in as many weeks.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
  • A cold here and there, and a bit of the flu. Nothing major.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
  • The Christmas gifts for my family.
((12. ?? 13.?? Learn to count people))

14. Where did most of your money go?
  • It's sill being saved up for a new computer.
15. What did you get really really really excited about?
  • Catching a glimpse of the elusive weasel that lives in my backyard, if only for a few precious moments.
16. What song will always remind you of 2011?
  • There were so many songs I could have chosen that reminded me of 2011, it was hard to pick just one, so I choose two.
1. Across That Line by Lost in Chaos
2. Year of the Suckerpunk by Amoral

Compared to last year are you:

17. Thinner or fatter?
  • I don't think about these things. Silly question.
18. Richer or poorer?
  • Slightly richer than last year. Not by much.
19. What do you wish you'd done more of?
  • Volunteering
20. What do you wish you'd done less of?
  • Worrying
21. How will you be spending Christmas?
  • I spent Christmas at home this year with my family. Without snow.
22. Did you fall in love in 2011?
  • Currently not on my radar screen right now.
((What happened to 23?))

24. What was your favorite TV program?
  • I watch quite a few television programs. I picked up a few new ones this year (some of the old ones were canceled). Really couldn't pick a favorite though. Here are a couple I'd recommend:

1. American Horror Story

2. Once Upon a Time

3. Unforgettable

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
  • I've decided to remove 'hate' from my vocabulary. So instead, I'll use dislike, and yes there are quite a few politicians I really dislike now that I didn't last year. In fact pretty much all of Congress, and most of the US. Government fits the bill.
26. What was the best book you read?
  • Inheritance by Christopher Paolini
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
  • Silent Fall: Heavy Metal from France
28. What did you want and get?
  • A photograph of my mother in front of the Chanel store in Paris, France.
29. What did you want and not get?
  • The chance to visit France. (Too expensive)
30. What was your favorite film this year?
  • The Help
31. What did you do on your birthday and how old were you?
  • I was a quarter century old (25) and I had a pizza and cupcake party.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
  • A drivers license. Still trying to jump through all the hoops.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?
  • Basic black and a flair for accessories, complimented by long wavy curls [of hair].
34. What kept you sane?
  • Music and a healthy dose of laughter every day.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
  • Apolo Ohno, for the awesome motivational advice he gives every day on Twitter.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
  • US. Congress' (mostly the GOP) War on woman, homosexuality, the middle class, aid for natural disasters, EPA, wolves, Muslims ........ (I guess you could say it was everything)
37. Who did you miss?
  • Suzi. She passed away in 2003.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
  • One of my father's classmates. We held a forty-five minute conversation during the reception of a memorial service and he talked about many of his past experiences.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011:
  • Live Abundantly. Forgive Quickly. Believe Joyously. Love Truly. Laugh Uncontrollably ~Jehshua Karunakaran

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
  • "The Future Belongs to the Brave."

From Stars Wars to Anvil!

Greetings Salutations and Good Morning!
Welcome to The Bumblebee Protocol
Brought to you by the nearest Band Name Generator (Story coming soon!)

In 2009 almost everyone I knew who had a Facebook account was using the Living Social application to take mini quizzes (memes) about almost every topic imaginable. These quizzes were insanely popular because not only could you tell the world, for example, what kind of superhero you were, but you could create your own quiz for your friends to take. By August of that same year it had reached fever pitch. I couldn’t log onto Facebook without seeing quiz after quiz from every single one of my friends.

Which Character on House M.D. Are You?

What Color is Your Aura?

What Animal Are You?

Initially I was against these quizzes, mostly due to privacy issues, but also because they were a giant fad and I had better things to do with my time. (Like write my thesis). However after some exploring I found a few quizzes I thought I could relate to and I also didn’t see anyone else posting them. One of these was a documentary type application where you list the last five movies you watched.

So at the end of August I posted my first batch of movies. It was then that I got the idea to keep track of what movies I watched for an entire year. I would post them on Facebook as well as write them down on paper (just in case Facebook screwed up). After a year had come and gone and I looked at my list, I noticed a few things:

  • I’ll watch pretty much any movie except for ‘chick flicks’ (there are a few notable exceptions)
  • I only watched one movie more than once (marked with a #)
  • If I haven’t seen a movie before, and it interests me, the 'critics' tend to have no influence on my final decision. (again exceptions always exist)
  • Except for three movies on this list, (marked with *) all of the movies were either viewed in the comfort of my own home, or with friends in their homes.
  • The three movies marked with a * were viewed in the theater.
So, with that in mind, here is my year of movies from August 2009 – August 2010

According to the latest medical/scientific research;

Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Humor lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert."
